SOST Write That Essay

r14/11/19, Thursday

Historians argue that understanding the causes of significant events are much more important than just remembering dates, facts and figures about things in the past. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840, creating an agreement between the Maori and the British. The Treaty of Waitangi was needed to maintain peace and construct laws between the Maori and British in New Zealand. Despite the treaty happening in the 1840s, it remains important in Aotearoa.

In the 1830s in New Zealand, a lot of lawless behaviour was happening in Kororareka also known as Russell Bay due to the lack of law and rules. Before the treaty was established there were a lot of diseases, prostitution and fights between the whalers, since there were no rules preventing them. The Maori are taking all of the damage caused by the whalers who arrived in Kororareka. The treaty was needed to prevent all of the lawlessness and to create trade laws between both parties.

The missionaries were trying to help the Maori protect their rights. This is important to building the treaty because it gives the Maori more reasons to sign the treaty, it also builds trust between the two parties. Some of the things they did to gain the trust of the Maori are they taught them how to read and write Te Reo, they shared farming techniques and introduced new technology to them and the missionaries bought land from the Maori as trustees. When the trade was made, it helped the missionaries and Maori strengthen their friendship and it helps the Maori establish their rights, therefore, giving the Maori sign the treaty easily.

Maori tribes were forced to trade crops and flax for muskets in order to fight back, the Maori used the Muskets to either fight other Maori tribes or get revenge and over 20,000 people were killed because of the musket wars. In this paragraph, I’m trying to prove that when the muskets were introduced, wars became more often between the Maori. After the muskets were introduced the land boundaries in New Zealand changed. A balance of power was created between the tribes when they got access to muskets. The Musket Wars caused more violence and deaths since there were no laws to restrain the trading of muskets. The treaty helped this situation by providing laws around the trading if muskets.

Was there anything in place before the Treaty of Waitangi? Interestingly, there was something place called the Declaration of Independence. It was signed on October 28, 1835, in the home of James Busby. With the Declaration, the Maori could trade in legal terms since they have a flag and they could express their Rangatiratanga, it made the Maori an independent country under the authority if United Tribes of New Zealand. After the Declaration was signed, a meeting was supposed to take place but the Maori didn’t attend the meeting. No laws and rules were created to protect the Maori as agreed to in the Declaration. Trading would be harder since they don’t have a flag to represent themselves. The Treaty was needed to create new laws to protect the Maori.

SOST Maori and European Population Graph

4/11/19, Monday

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. What does the Graph show us?
The graph shows us that the population of the Maori people is slowly declining while the Europeans are slowly growing throughout the years.

2. Why do you think the numbers of Maori change?
It may be caused by strong earthquakes and wars. It is also very hard to survive because of the tribes fighting each other.

3. Why do you think the numbers of Europeans change?
I think it's because of their economy. Europeans were able to trade a lot with people in another country this can be the cause of their growing population more material and food made them survive longer.

Cadbury Advertisement

As Coco woke up from his sleep, he stood up from his bed and felt that the ground was kinda weird. He looked around and saw that the ground was made out of some kind of chocolate, he looked outside and saw the vibrant blue ocean was no longer there instead brown water and brown waves were splashing around. He thought to himself what was happening, was he dreaming? he pinched himself to make sure that this is all a dream. He felt pain and he blinked but he was still in the weird world. He stepped outside of the house and felt the wind hit his face, the wind had the smell of sweetness, like chocolate. There were barely any people here, I stepped closer to the ocean and dipped by hand into it. It felt like a thick cream and smells like chocolate, I stuck my tongue out and tasted some of it,

it is chocolate! Amazing, I walked forward the chocolate getting deeper before I knew it I was hit by a big wave. I stumbled and fell into the thick waves of chocolate, after that I saw black.

Coco opened his eyes, the sunlight blinding him, he stood up and looked around "Where am I?" Coco mumbled to himself. It seemed like he is still in the chocolate world but this time he was floating in the ocean on a surfboard. Soon, he noticed the grey fin sticking out of the water, his heart started to pound faster, he stayed still trying not to attract the attention of the lurking predator. All of a sudden the shark popped out of the water "Didn't think I'd notice you." said the shark, Coco was beyond terrified, he stumbled in shock
"H-how?" Coco stuttered "Oh, you're not from around here." said the shark smirking "I could help you but..." the shark continued "But what?" replied Coco "Promise me something, kid." said the shark whispering "You'd come surf with me, every day." stated the shark "Yeah, sure." answered Coco. Coco grabbed his fin and the shark started to swim towards land, they arrived at the land “See you tomorrow, kid.” said the shark as he swam away, Coco waved his hand goodbye.

He went inside the house and laid down the bed, he sighed as his eyes started to close a girl appeared out of nowhere “Hey, I saw you talking to the shark.” said the girl as she sat down the bed next to Coco “Yeah, what about it?” asked Coco “You’re not from here, want to go back to your world?” The girl stated “Yeah!” Coco replied instantly “I can transport you back but how about your friend?” asked the girl “I’ll um talk to him about it.” said Coco the girl nodded and stood up “See you tomorrow then.” the girl said as she went outside the house, Coco closed his eyes and fell asleep.

The next morning Coco ran towards the ocean with the surfboard “Hey um shark, I can’t surf with you anymore.” said Coco “Why?” asked the shark “Well, I have to go back to my world.” he replied “But that’s no fun, don’t you like it here?” “It’s fun here but I have family and friends back at my world, just like you, I value my surroundings and my habitat. ” explained Coco “Oh okay, um I guess this is goodbye then, I enjoyed my time with you.” The shark said before he swimming away but this time he swam faster, he disappeared in the horizon.

Coco looked at the ocean one more time before he walked towards the girl “I’m ready.” the girl smiled as she hands him chocolate shaped shark he looked at the girl sadly “Thank you.” Coco smiled as he took a bite of the chocolate, he only saw black. He woke up frantically seeing the room he sighed in relief, he looked at the clock it’s the same day only hours have passed since he left, weird he felt as if days have passed, he smiled standing up and going downstairs to eat breakfast, I guess.

ENGLISH Unexpected Wealth

18/10/19, Friday

You’re cleaning out your garage and, hidden away in a back corner, you find an old shoebox. The box is heavier than it should be. When you open it up, you find cash—$40,000, to be exact. Where did the cash come from, who hid it there and why?

I was sitting on my couch when I thought of how my garage is messy and how I haven't cleaned it for months. I stood up and opened the door leading to my garage, I looked around and my face scrunched from disgust. I went inside to grab cleaning supplies and went back to the garage. I started grabbing items and putting them inside a box so I can clean them and sort them afterwards. I saw an old shoebox in the back of the stacked items, I stretched my arms and grabbed it. It was heavier than I thought it was gonna be, it must still have shoes inside, but I don't remember leaving shoes here. I placed it on top of a box and opened it, I was shocked to see $40,000 who could've left them here? I stood up and carried the box inside, now that I think about it, this house used to be lived in by my grandparents. I grabbed my phone and decided to call my mum, "Hey, mum, do you remember an old shoebox from grandad's house?" I said while looking at the box "Not really, no." replied my mum "Can you come here and take a look?" "Sure, Your dad and I will be there." "Thanks." I ended the call and sat down on the couch thinking who could've owned this much money. I didn't realise I was spacing out until someone rang the doorbell. I stood up and opened the door, I was greeted with my mum kissing my cheeks "Hi, what did you wanna show us?" asked dad "It's over here" I spoke while walking towards the living room. I showed them the shoebox filled with money, mum was shocked by all the money "Maybe we should call grandad," Said Dad "I'll do it." he continued. A few hours later grandad arrived "Yeah, yeah I remember now." "Your grandma and I used to dream of living a life where we were able to support our grandchildren, over the years we collected our money until we just forgot about it." he said, "Then you can have it since you earned it." I replied, "No, no, remember we earned that for you, you take it." he said back.

ENGLISH Workshop 3 Slam Poetry

18/10/19, Friday

Step 1 - Know the genreBen StokesJenniferDaisy Lavea-Timo.

Step 2- Choose a topic- identify an event, person, or issue that evokes a passion in you. When you're fired up, emotions and words are more likely to flow out of you.

Step 3- Put it on Paper -Use your five senses to create the first draft. Write down what you see, hear, taste, touch, and smell when you think about your topic. Details are key when it comes to painting a vivid picture through slam poetry, so always ask yourself: "could I be more specific?" Craft your words into short stanzas that lend themselves to a natural rhythm and feel free to use rhyme if you feel like it.

Step 4- Edit Aloud- When editing, read your poem out loud. If you find yourself stumbling over certain lines that are clunky or too long, that's when you know that a section probably needs to be cut, changed, or moved

Step 5- Add the Drama-  Remember, you're not just reading your poem out loud—you're performing! The goal is to get the audience to audibly react (i.e. laugh, cry, gasp, snap, clap, yell "yeah!"). Are there moments where you can whisper or shout? Are there places where you can speed up or slow down? Can you throw in facial expressions or bodily movements to illustrate your main messages?

English In Santa's Defence

09/27/19, Friday

In Santa’s defence the kids' list read ‘velociraptor’, not ‘toy velociraptor’ Tell the story (as a story or poem)

As Santa was going through the wish list of kids he stumbles upon a weird request, he read the wish again to make sure he wasn't reading it wrong. He called one of the elves up to his office when the elf arrived he quickly spoke: "This list contains a velociraptor." said Santa the elf looked at the list closely "I've no idea." shrugged the elf, Santa rubbed his temples, head hurting from the crazy request. Who would request such a thing thought Santa but Christmas was coming fast and he can't waste time thinking about one request he quickly sent the wish to one of his elves.

When Christmas came a kid was wondering how a large gift box got into his house "Mum, Dad look I've got a large present!" said the kid eagerly. The kid with the help of his mum and dad unwrapped the large present. Surprised with what was inside a sleeping real velociraptor, scared, the parents quickly called the police but it was too late when the velociraptor woke up and ran straight through their wall causing havoc around town.

Santa was resting after the long night of going around the world, he was still thinking of the odd request he received from one of the kids. Then his telephone ringed, he got up his bed and picked up the phone "Hello?" spoke Santa with confusion mixed in his voice "Hello, Santa this is the police we wish to talk to you." said the guy on the other side of the phone "Oh, okay." Santa agreed without putting much thought to it. When he arrived he parked his sleigh in one of the vacant parking he went inside the police station. He was currently sitting talking to the police "Take a look at this." said the police showing pictures of a live velociraptor crashing around everything in town. At this point Santa was soaking with sweat "I can explain." Santa said while grabbing through his sack looking for a certain letter "Here you go." he handed over the letter "Oh, well can you fix it?" asked the police "I'll try." replied Santa, he rode his sleigh around town looking for the large creature.

When he saw the large velociraptor he sighed in relief he grabbed an empty sack and jumped on the velociraptor putting it inside the sack. He grabbed a ribbon and tied it around the mouth of the sack do the creature can't escape. Now the damage needs to be taken care of "Sorry Santa." said the police while hading over a cup of milk and a couple of cookies "I will see to it that I repair the damage on your town." said Santa while eating a piece of cookie "No worries, we can do it, I also told the kids to be specific on what they want."

SOST Essay Writing

09/26/19, Thursday
Describe ways in which technology has changed over time. Explain how it is different from the technology we use today.
Technology has changed over time over time. In this essay, I will discuss the technology used by Romans, Egyptians and Cavemen. The technological advances include the creation of hieroglyphics, aqueducts and stone tools. These examples are gonna show how technology has advanced over time and how it’s different from our present technology.

Communication and writing are very important for humans a done of the earliest communication and writing is the hieroglyphics. You can see Hieroglyphics across Eqypt, the Rosetta stone that is filled with Hieroglyphics was found in 1799. This is important because without all of this we won't have a way to communicate and understand each other, hieroglyphics mainly used pictures as a way of telling what it is instead of the letters that we used today. Hieroglyphics used pictures to represent a letter while we use letters themselves.

Aqueducts were built by the ancient Romans to deal with plumbing and to be able to get water. The ancient Rome aqueducts were big and spread out tunnels were used to deliver water through lines and bridges and then all across the valley. Compared to the modern plumbing which is smaller and could travel across everything, the modern plumbing was more complex with two separate subsystems one that delivers freshwater and one that takes wastewater out. We can see the difference between Ancient Rome's aqueducts and modern plumbing.

Tools are helpful and can help us survive through tough times. The cavemen were able to develop tools that made them much powerful and live a longer life with the tools they made. They mainly used stones and sticks, they sharpen both the stones and sticks to make a weapon that could pierce through the skin. The modern tools we have today can be made out of different kinds of metals and are stronger and we have more materials we can use, we developed new long-ranged weapons like guns. Over time we developed different kinds of weapons and tools that helped us against predators.

This essay showed how technology evolved and the difference between modern technology and past technology. Hieroglyphics developed with a simple more version but many words were created. Aqueducts evolved to smaller and much more complex routes. Tools were made with stronger and longer-lasting materials. These are the ways technology evolved to what it is now.

No edges, it’s like a room you’re stuck in, an endless Circle.
It’s just silence where you have no one to talk to.
It gives the feeling of warmth in your body,
A lone animal that is trying to find its place.

It’s foggy where you can’t see anything from the distance, waiting for what comes next.

50 Word Lyrics:

  • Have a go at writing your song with no more than 50 unique words in the lyrics.

Stuck in an endless circle, the silence ringing through my ears, Stuck in an endless circle, with no one to talk to, Stuck in an endless circle. The warmth is taking over my body, I'm like a lone animal trying to find my place, I'm stuck in an endless circle.
