Workshop 4 - How is colour used to enhance the story?

30/07/19, Tuesday

1.  District 12
Green, dull, dark, browns, grey, white, black. Nature/Natural palette.
Feel- wild, country, natural, free-poor-can't afford nice buildings.

2. Capitol
White, greys, silver, metals.
Building/environment- metallic, industrial, technological.
Bright colourful- people.
Feel- futuristic, wealthy, greedy, rich, technology advanced.

3. Control Room
White, blues, clean.
Technology advanced
People wearing white clothes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colour is used effectively to show the theme of rich vs poor. This is demonstrated in the two scenes- District 12 at the start of the film and The Capitol is Katniss and Peeta arrive on the train. In District 12 a natural, dull and dark palette of greens and browns is used to create a wild atmosphere. In the Capitol, a metallic, industrial colour palette of whites, silvers and greys is used to create a feeling of an advanced society. The purpose of this is to show teh rich vs poor in the two societies The Capitol has more bright colours whereas District 12 has dull colours to show their run-down buildings and overworn clothing. Combined with the use of costumes we're able to see the divide between the wealthy in The Capitol and the poor of District 12. This reminds the audience of the Riot scene later in the film when the poor citizens of District 11 rebel against the rule of the Capitol.

Science Wet cell and Dry cell batteries.

29/07/19, Monday
Image result for dry cell batteryImage result for wet cell battery
What is the difference between "wet cell batteries" and dry cell batteries?
The main difference between the wet cell batteries and dry cell batteries is the wet cell batteries uses a liquid electrolyte and dry cell battery uses paste electrolyte.

Where do we commonly find examples of each?
Wet cell batteries are commonly found in aviation and electric utilities. We commonly use dry cell batteries in portable mobile devices such as laptops and toys.

Why are some batteries able to be recharged and others not?
If a battery is rechargeable or not depends on the materials used. Some batteries use cheap materials that can corrode easily. Some batteries use alkaline which is not as effective and has risks when you try to recharge it. Lithium-ion is more effective because they are more reactive than alkaline.

English Analyse Plot - Freytag's Pyramid

26/07/19, Friday

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-What am I learning?
I'm learning how to analyse the plot of a film.

-How does this work show my learning?
This shows my learning by showing how the plot escalated and how it went.

-What am I wondering as a result of this learning?
I'm wondering if a plot can lose one of this aspect.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Critical Literacy Question:
Whose views are excluded or privilege in the text?

I think that the view of Effie Trinket is excluded since we never get her perspective of what's going on and what she feels about The Hunger Games. I believe that if we are to get the perspective of Effie in the film we can get more information out of the film and about all of the history of The Hunger Games.

SOST My Boomerang

25/07/19, Thursday

1. Explain the purpose of the activity.
The purpose of this activity is to learn more about the boomerang and aboriginal culture.

2. Explain the story on your boomerangs, including the meaning of the colours.
The story in my boomerang is based on my own experiences. The green represents all of the trees and plants. The blue represents the sea and the yellow represents the colour of the sun. The white represents clouds. The red represents the desert sands. The human track going towards the red colours mean that I went through hardships and some problems along the way. After going through all of the red sands all of the dots represents the reward you're going to get after all the hard work you did. The long line with dots represents the long journey you need to have to be able to reach the paradise that is the trees, the trees represent the forest which can mean that the calm part of your journey which can be nature.

3. What went well when painting your boomerang.
I think that the way I planned the story and painted it went well.

Workshop 3 - How are costumes used to enhance the story?

25/07/19, Thursday

How are costumes used to enhance the story?

 1st image:
Blues/Whites, many people, all look the same, faded- overwash/wear/wash/wear, girls braided hair, boys combed short hair, girls wear dresses/skirts, boys wear a collared shirt, wear best clothes to the reaping.

-Very poor, living in poverty.
-The audience feels bad for them.
- Complete juxtaposed to Effie Trinket with Effie having bright clothes, makeup.
-Shows how poor they are compared to Effie.

2nd image:
headpieces, vibrant colours, over teh top makeup, good quality bright, clean, clothes, nobody looks the same.

-Rich over the top.
-Juxtaposed to District 12.
-Increased technology.
-Shows us that they are wealthy and advanced.

3rd image:
Jackets, running shoes, simple, t-shirts, simple. dull colours, camouflage, they use camouflage to make the game more interesting because the tributes are harder to find.

-We feel terrified/nervous for them.
-Depersonalises them.
-Makes us feel like they're all the same because it makes it easier to forget a character when someone got killed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Themes:

  • Hope & Rebellion.
  • Rich vs Poor.
  • Struggle for power.
Costumes are used effectively to show the imbalance between rich and poor, the Capital and District 12, in Panam. For instance, this is seen in teh reaping scene where the figure of Effie Trinket is juxtaposed to those of District 12. In this scene, the children of District 12 are wearing dull, faded, simple clothes whilst Effie wears a vibrant pink outfit an extravagant wig and over the top makeup. This makes us understand how unwealthy the people of District 12 are compared to people living in the Capital. The purpose of this is to show that life in all the districts is not as hard as it is in District 12. Coinciding with this is the use of setting in District 12 everything is run down and old but in the Capital, it is new, clean and colourful. The costumes in the Reaping scene can be juxtaposed to those worn by citizens of the Capital seen by Peeta and Katniss on the train.

5 ways we can avoid bacteria.
1. Keep raw meat inside the freezer until we are ready to use it.
2. Store perishable foods correctly. Store Meat inside, fruits in either a cool, dry place or in the freezer.
3. Clean our area with Antibacterial Spray and a cloth.
4. Make sure to store the food in a shallow dish because it can cool down easily when the food is spread and not on top of each other.
5. Don't keep food at room temperature longer than 2 hours because bacteria can double every 20 minutes after 2 hours.

(Sorry for the bad quality)

- How has food changed in the last 100 years and what has been the big reason for this change?
There are more packaged, processed foods and more takeaways. We have higher fat foods, sugar, salt. In the past, the Maori people used to hunt for food like Moa, fishes and eels, when the settlers came they god their food from sailing on boats and their crops grow depends on the season.

-What was something you didn't know about changes in NZ food that learnt from the cards
I learnt that the Maori people used to make their weapons, nets, baskets from resources that could be found e.g stones, bones, flax.

-What could you see happening to food in another 50 years time?
We would have more meat and more processed food while technology continues to improve our cooking methods making it easier to cook food faster.

-What could you invent or change that would create a large impact on how we gather, produce or eat food.
We can invent chemicals that would make our crops grow faster and bigger, so we can get more resources for food.

3 Things that influence change.

Economical
-Sustainability - to easy access through supermarkets.
- laws were more relaxed around imported foods.
-Immigration laws loosened that allowed people to settle here.

Cultural
-Access to new dishes.
-Traditions passed down a generation.
-Due to immigration, more food places are opening up e.g Thai, Indian.

Societal
-Media - Reaches a wider audience - Social media
-Health - Millions of money spent on this due to obesity and other specific health issues.
-Education - Students are better educated around Healthy lifestyles - Agency promoting Healthy living.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
28/08/19, Wednesday
A food we cooked at Home Economics is Fish and chips. This fits the history of the New Zealand food history, it is unknown when it went to New Zealand but it is possible that the British settlers bought fish and chips to NZ.

We first cut the potatoes evenly so all of the fries can cook properly. Then we crumbed the fish we used mayonnaise to stick the crumbs on the fish. Instead of frying the fish we baked it because it is a healthier solution. Our practical was healthier than teh takeout because we used the baking technique to remove some extra fats.

I learned that we can use different techniques to make food healthier and I will certainly apply this to future cooking I will be doing.

Blog Comment Example:
Hi Miss Taylor! I really like how you suggested some things we can do with the chips and how we can make it healthier.

I tried your suggestion about the fish and it turned out great and healthier. Next time can you elaborate on the health issues it can cause.

Can I know what kind of foods you can use this technique with?

Introduction to Japan
1. Something new I learnt about Japan? I learnt that Japan takes its food seriously and they make their food look more like art.

2. How do Japanese foods and presentation compare to NZ?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
18/09/19, Wednesday

This term we have been looking at a cultural unit.
So far I have learnt many countries influenced the food in New Zealand and different foods the other cultures provides. I know I have learnt this because I did work about it and we talked about this in class about how they relate to NZ food. Practicals we have made this term are scones, sushi, pizza, fish and chips and souvlaki they are originally from Britain, Japan, Italy and Greece they have mainly made it to Nz when certain cultures conquer New Zealand or when there is a lot of immigration. Skills I have learnt from the practicals are trying different techniques to make food healthier and I will use these in the future by cooking in my own kitchen and maybe when trying to get a career. Working with other people in my group has been exciting and fun we understood each other and we help each other with good teamwork.

ESSAY BRAINSTORMING- 1

23/007/19, Tuesday

1. Stories are told better through TV than books.

  • A better understanding of the story.
  • Books can make you learn new things than a TV.
  • When the stories from the TV are taken from the book they missout some of the plots of the true story that is told in the book.
  • Books have the effect to make you feel like you are part of the story itself.
-Stories are better told through books that TV because they are more clear with their story and you can analyze the story better if told with words.

Workshop 1: How do camera shots and angles enhance the story?

03/07/19, Wednesday

Over the shoulder-Connects the viewer to the conversation.
Extreme long shot- Show us the crowd, there are so many people.
High angle- See more, people below are seen as vulnerable, shows Snow is powerful.
P.
Camera shots and angles are used effectively in the film  'The Hunger Games.' For example, in the scene after the tribute parade where we first see the character of President Snow. Gary Ross uses a combination of over the shoulder and high angle with an extreme long shot to show Snow addressing the crowd. This makes us understand that Snow is a powerful person in the Capitol as everyone is listening to him. The purpose of this is to show that Snow's supremacy among the people in the capitol and the tributes. Coinciding with this, the use of setting shows a special place above others for Snow and below for the tributes. This can be juxtaposed to the scene later in the film where Katniss and Peeta reclaim power by threatening to eat the poisonous berries in the Arena.

Dutch tilt- To show that things are out of the normal. Katniss is out of place, she volunteers as tribute to save her sister- she is saying I will die for my sister.
Low angle- Makes the subject bigger/more important. Katniss is the first volunteer in district 12, She has just been selected to be tribute above all others.
Mid shot- Makes the viewer an onlooker, makes the audience feel like she is alone, the facial expression is vulnerable.
P.
We see this when Katniss Everdeen was at the stage at the reaping. This makes the audience feel like she is alone at the shot. The director Gary Ross did this to show that something isn't right and that Katniss is alone and separated from the rest of the crowd. This worked well with the facial expression fo Katniss which is a worried expression that something might happen. This aspect can be juxtaposed to when Katniss and Peeta were at the parade Katniss's facial expression shows confidence and that she can do this compared to the reaping where she looks worried.

Art Blog Post Reflection

01/07/19, Monday

  1. Where is your focal point? Why did you choose it and decide to put it where it is? Our focal point is the titles by using the pastel colours and the shapes we draw the attention to the titles. We also put the handshake as our focal point.
  2. How are your shapes and lines leading you to your focal point? The shapes we chose are simple and can attract attention easily.
  3. Why did you choose the colours you did? We originally did bright colours but later on, we chose to go with pastel colours to lighten the colour of the magazine and be more pleasant to look at.
  4. Does your text reflect the hierarchy rule? How? Yes, because I put the titles as big letters and the text as small fonts. I also made sure that the fonts can relate to each other.
  5. How does your page link with the other members in your group? We used to colours to link our pages we used pastel colours to relate all of our magazine pages. By putting the colours you can see that our pages are related.
  6. Based on the start of the term, where would you now rate yourself on the solo levels? Why? I would rate myself at 3 because I still need to improve how I relate the pages to my learning since some aspects have no meaning and I just randomly put things in.
