Group DLO about the Kea

 25/09/20, Friday

Reflective Paragraph:
In ESOL we made a DLO about the Kea. We focused on one aspect which is the physical features. We worked well together and we were able to separate the jobs, we were able to gather the information we needed and write it in our own words. Although, we did not manage to make use of our time and it took longer to make than it needed to be. I will need to improve how to manage our time and designs. I enjoyed working with my friends and being able to make a DLO that I enjoy.

The Year 11 ESOL trip to Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

My ESOL class and I went to Willowbank Wildlife reserve last Friday to study some Kea and Kiwi.

First, we had to leave Period 1, 5 minutes early to get there on time. We rode a van and left the school at 9:45 a.m. We arrived at Willowbank and we didn't go in immediately instead we had to wait for Ms Briggs to get our tickets and let us in. We went straight to the Kea enclosure where we met the caretaker Rachel. She told us some facts about Kea. After that, we had to find a Kea we can examine and analyze its behaviour and appearance. When we were done we had some free time for an hour. We went to the farm and looked at the various animals. I saw a Clydesdale, a variety of farm animals, we also fed some ducks and deers. After our free time, we had to go to the Kiwi enclosure. We met up with Rachel again and she taught us about the Kiwi and the nest egg programme. Shortly after that, we went to the Kiwi enclosure where it was dark and cold, we only saw one Kiwi. My friends and I were ahead and went straight to the cafeteria where we waited for the bus until 1:00 p.m. We arrived at school at 1:20 p.m just in time for lunch.

It was a fun trip, it was the second trip I had in ESOL. The first one was at The International Antarctic Centre. I saw a lot of New Zealand native birds and animals. I learnt a lot of new things about the native and the introduced animals here in New Zealand.

Black Panther Themes and Ideas

 28/08/20, Friday

1. Summary:

T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns as King in the African nation of Wakanda. After his father, the king died. A new enemy is introduced and T'Challa's ability to deal with the new problem arising will test his ability to rule as a king. The new king must decide between isolation and exposure.

2. Key ideas:

 Traditions vs. Changes:

The film tackles the idea of whether it is good to move on from traditions and make some changes. Wakanda is still governed by a monarch while the rest of the world has formed some type of democracy. The people of Wakanda have believed that their isolation is the best protection they have from the rest of the world. Although their traditions are their biggest vulnerability as well. The tradition of ritual combat handed the throne over to an "outsider"

Flora and Fauna relationships

 26/08/20, Wednesday

The New Zealand bush is full of fascinating creatures such as the friendly fantail,

the dimorphic tomtits, and the welcoming bellbird. Not only that but it also consists of

beautiful flowers and plants like the annoying supplejack vines, nutritional mistletoe flower,

and various fruits.

The supplejack vines are a common native vine in New Zealand.

They can be commonly found in the rainforests but can also be found in swamp areas.

Its hard but flexible stems cling to trees and climb until it can access sunlight.

Another interesting plant is the mistletoe flower. It is a semiparasitic plant,

which means that they rely on photosynthesis but it also requires nutrition from the host tree.

There are nine species of mistletoe flowers. It is a shrub that grows on trees with clusters of tiny

flowers, which come in a variety of colours.

The fantail is a well-known bird in New Zealand that can grow up to 16cm and weigh 8g.

They usually visit parks and gardens, which makes encountering one easy. Their body

consists of brown, white and black feathers. Some of the fantails can have white spots on

their ears. The bellbird, also known as korimako is famous for being a honeyeater in the

South Island. They have yellowish-green feathers with a short slightly curved black beak.

Females are commonly more brown than their male counterparts.

Their songs vary according to regions, it is ringing notes with a match of grunts and wheezes.

The New Zealand Pigeon or kererū is a common sight since they have a widespread distribution

throughout the country. They are present in rural, urban and native forests.

Their body consists of purple-blue colours and white stomach.

They are often silent except for their occasional ‘oos.’

In the wild, relationships among the animals vary and can be beneficial for one side

or sometimes for both sides. The first relationship is beneficial for both the fantails and tomtits

because they use the supplejack as a sanctuary. Somewhere they can rest on, the supplejack

vines climb on the trees, which can provide the birds somewhere they can perch that is high

enough and is safe from predators. The second relationship is beneficial for both the flora and

fauna. The bellbird feeds on the nectar of the mistletoe flower using its long-slightly curved beak.

The bellbird gets to have the nutrition that the flower provides while the pollen of the flower

covers the head of the bird. The bellbird would search for the mistletoe flowers to feed on and

along the way pollinate the other flowers. The kererū helps various fruits in the bush.

Its beak is big enough to help swallow large fruit seeds. The droppings of the bellbird contain

the seed of the fruits, therefore, helping plants and new fruits to grow.

In conclusion, the bush creates various relationships between animals.

It can be prey and predator, but sometimes it can be favourable for both parties:

The supplejack vines providing perches for tomtits and fantails, the bellbird helping pollinate

the mistletoe flowers and getting the food it needs at the same time and the bellbird helping

spread seeds of the fruits it ate.

Presentation Reflection

04/08/20, Tuesday

In ESOL, we had to present in front of the class for an assessment. The Assessment gives 5 credits for Level 1 NCEA. The assessment can be about someone or something that is important to you. I chose to write and present about my friend, Alliah Abuan.

Before my presentation, I didn't really think about it. As the days passed, I started to get more nervous. I was also excited at the same time about standing in front of the class and speaking. Furthermore, this was really good practice for me because the future assessments and jobs could include public speaking.

Presenting is not my strong point but I could think of something I did well. Firstly, I would say that my voice was good and I was able to have a good volume. I didn't rush through it and I kept a consistent pace throughout my presentation. Also, I was able to control my body language. I used gestures related to the subject that I was talking about. For example, when I said Alliah's name I drew attention towards her using my hand. By pointing at her direction, everyone looked towards where I was pointing.

Even if we think that we did great, there is always something we could improve on. For me, I could've improved on how I delivered my lines. I wasn't able to create an impact on the audience because I spoke with a monotone voice. This bored the audience and created no impact. In other words, I could've put more emotions. In addition to the delivery of my lines, I forgot my lines. I wish that I put more effort into reading my lines and trying to memorize them.

I still had fun doing the assessment. I enjoyed being able to present in front and gaining experience. What I found challenging, was memorizing my lines. Since I have a pretty bad memory this created a challenge for me.

The Charge of the Light Brigade
I
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,- Repetition. Half a league was repeated. I think this is effective because by repeating this you are reminding people of a topic and I think repetition is a good way to make people remember things.
All in the valley of Death
   Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
   Rode the six hundred.

II
“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
   Someone had blundered.
   Theirs not to make reply,
   Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
   Into the valley of Death
   Rode the six hundred.

III
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
   Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
   Rode the six hundred.

IV
Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
   All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
   Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
   Not the six hundred.

V
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
   Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
   Left of six hundred.

VI
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
   All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
   Noble six hundred!
3rd person,

Funeral Blues
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message 'He is Dead'.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,-Hyperbole, an exaggeration, no one can be this important that when they leave you, you won't know where you are going to go.
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;- Alliteration. the repetition of my in the sentence. I think this was effective because you can really tell how the person treasures their loved ones.
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.- Emotive language, the people who got their heartbroken will relate to the poem. I think this was effective because putting this here will spark a pain inside people who can relate has experienced heartbreak.

The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

English Film Techniques

How Does Tone Work In Films?
Tone is usually used to set the mood. The brighter it is the happier the scene is but when the colour is a bit dull it can be sombre or sad.

What else can we call tone in films?
Tone can be called brightness as well.

What are the 3 main elements of tone?
The three main elements of tone are lighting, exposure and art direction.

How and why does Coppola use tone in the classic film 'The Godfather'?
Coppola used dark and underexposed tones for the movies. He did this to show the contrasts of the family with the others hiding behind the shadows and some that don't know what's going on behind the shadows.

How can directors control the feelings of the scenes?

How does over-the-shoulder-shot work?

What is the effect of an over-the-shoulder shot?
The effect of an over-the-shoulder shot is to help connect your characters and help the viewers to be able to feel as if they're in that scene themselves.

What film aspect shows a disconnection between characters?
Using a single shot can show a disconnect between your characters.

How does the director of this scene show the disconnect of the characters?
By using a dolly shot or a single shot it shows that the characters are no longer
understanding each other perspective.

HomeEc L1 Chop Suey

03/03/20, Tuesday

During yesterday's practical, we ensured that we limited the chance of contamination by washing the vegetables to make sure to get rid of the dirt and other chemicals on the vegetable. We used different clean boards and knives for both the vegetables and the beef, we used the red board and knife for the beef and the green board and knife for the vegetables. We collected our beef by using tongs and putting it on a clean plate, we did this because if we used our hands, we might've transferred more bacteria since we touched other foods. We prevented other food particles from getting into our food. I know that our food is safe because we took away one of their needs which is their food source this could prevent them from growing faster on the food.

A news Item that interests me

03/02/20, Monday

A recent news item that interests me was when Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash. The helicopter crashed into a hillside near Calabasas, California on January 27. Kobe and his daughter, along with seven other people were going to the Mamba Sports Academy where a youth basketball tournament was being held. It is reported that the foggy weather caused the helicopter to crash, although officials say that it was not allowed to fly in the fog.

What was interesting about this news is that it was unexpected that he would die in an accident like that since the helicopter was declared as a safe aircraft. I also find it fascinating that the news got to it first and the families of the people involved in the accident had to find out through the news.

The whole world was shocked by this news. Many people didn't believe it at first and were still in a state of shock when the news came out. My dad is a big Kobe Bryant fan and I could tell he was greatly affected when he found out that Kobe was dead. He called from work just to tell us that Kobe was dead and kept repeating it as if he didn't want to believe the news. It struck almost all of the people from all over the world since Kobe wasn't only known for being an excellent basketball player but also a great inspiration and being kindhearted.

This makes me think about what happened when they were about to crash knowing well that he had his daughter with him. What was he thinking? just thinking about him hugging his daughter and telling her it was okay and they're going to be safe. I wonder if he was thinking about how he couldn't save his daughter and he can't do anything to help her in a situation like that.
